Google must face antitrust lawsuit

A U.S. federal judge has ruled that a proposed consumer antitrust lawsuit against Google can move forward, rejecting the company’s bid to have it dismissed. The lawsuit accuses Google of illegally maintaining dominance in the online search market by striking business deals with device makers, carriers and browser developers to make its search engine the default, which plaintiffs say stifled competition. The judge allowed core claims to proceed but dismissed allegations tied to conduct before 2017, and plaintiffs may amend those. The case mirrors similar government antitrust actions finding Google’s search practices unlawful; Google denies wrongdoing and contends rivals couldn’t realistically compete.
