A U.S. federal trade-court judge has ordered the government to begin refunding more than $130bn in tariffs that were recently ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court. The ruling directs U.S. Customs and Border Protection to recalculate duties paid by importers and issue refunds excluding the invalidated tariffs. More than 2,000 companies, including Costco, FedEx, and Pandora, have filed lawsuits seeking to recover the tariffs they paid. The order came during a case involving a filtration company seeking reimbursement. The Trump administration is expected to appeal the decision, arguing that processing the refunds would be complex and time-consuming due to millions of import records. However, the judge rejected a request to pause the order while an appeal is pursued. The Supreme Court previously ruled the tariffs, imposed using an old law, were invalid but did not specify how repayments should occur, leaving the issue to the U.S. Court of International Trade to resolve.
