California has become the first state to implement laws targeting political deepfakes ahead of the November election. Governor Gavin Newsom has signed three bills that require social media companies to act against deepfakes, including removing them upon receiving complaints. California Rep. Jim Costa said: “I think it’s a grave concern to all of us that any person would use artificial intelligence to impersonate, malign, or mislead voters — it’s wrong.” However, some free speech advocates warn that these laws could lead to misinterpretations and potential First Amendment violations. A lawsuit has already been filed in California challenging the enforcement of these laws.
