The U.S. government has accused Russia of attempting to interfere in the upcoming elections, and has announced measures to counteract these actions. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has disrupted a campaign dubbed “Doppelganger,” which was aimed at spreading Russian propaganda to undermine support for Ukraine and influence U.S. voters. Two employees of RT, a Russian state-owned media outlet, were indicted for a $10m scheme to distribute content while concealing their Russian ties. Attorney General Merrick Garland said: “Russia remains the most active foreign threat to our elections,” as he highlighted ongoing concerns about foreign influence. The DOJ has seized 32 internet domains linked to the campaign, which involved Russian companies and President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. The Kremlin has a history of using fake social media accounts to sow discord, with previous campaigns identified as early as 2022.
