DEI initiatives continue to thrive as over 100 lawyers participate in Diversity Lab Hackathon

Despite facing significant legal, political, and social challenges, the drive for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) remains strong within the legal profession. This resilience was evident as more than 100 lawyers and in-house counsel participated in a DEI Hackathon organized by Diversity Lab. Jay Williams, a partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, expressed his commitment to improving the legal profession through this initiative. Participants from firms such as K&L Gates, Holland & Knight, and Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr collaborated over five months to pitch innovative DEI frameworks and products. The winning ideas focused on fair work allocation and encouraging individual actions to foster inclusive environments. The top concepts included tools for tracking high-visibility work, dashboards for associate skills and work preferences, and platforms for project staffing transparency and client feedback. The Diversity Lab will develop and implement these ideas in the winners’ organizations by 2025, continuing their mission to embed DEI into the legal talent system.
